Part 2

The Inside Story
New Delhi, Nov 11: A young Delhi-based Bengali couple, who went missing since 18 days, were found to be murdered by a cab driver, whom they had hired during their Uttarakhand tour, in October this year.

According to a report published in TOI, 27-year-old Moumita Das and 24-year-old Avijit Paul had gone on vacations to Dehradun on Tuesday, October 21, by train.

Vacations took a tragic turn

On Friday, October 24, the couple had hired a cab driver Raju to take them for sight seeing at Chakrata and Tiger Top Hill.

Raju was accompanied by three of his accomplices, who reportedly told the couple that they would return on their own from Chakrata after watching a 'nautanki'.

While returning from Chakrata, the trio along with Raju asked the couple to step out of the car at Lakhamandal.

Then, they robbed the couple and in a cold-blooded murder, they threw them off the steep cliff.

The family of both, Moumita and Avijit were running from pillar-to-post in a hope to find any trace of their missing children.

Couple's family lodged Police complaint

On Wednesday, October 29, Moumita's father registered a missing complaint at Delhi's Saket police station.

On Thursday, Nov 6, Vikas Nagar Bazaar Chowki police officials in Uttarakhand summoned the cab driver Raju for questioning, but later, he was let-off.

On Sunday, Nov 9, the Delhi police cracked the case when they reached Uttarkhand.

Upon reaching there, they found out that Raju had inserted a new sim in his mobile and earlier his phone was going switched-off.

Avijit's body recovered, Moumita still missing

Naugaon police informed Delhi police that they had found Avijit's body and are still searching for Moumita's body.

Moumita hailed from Kalyani, Nadia district while Avijit was from Dum Dum near Kolkata in West Bengal.

The couple were staying in South Delhi's Lado Sarai area. Moumita used to teach at Gurgaon's Pathways International School while Avijit was a painter.

Taxi Driver arrested for allegedly killing missing couple

Dehradun, November 10

One taxi driver from Chakrata has been arrested by the Delhi police on Monday for allegedly killing one Delhi-based couple in Chakrata on Sunday. The arrested driver, Raju Das, hails from Chakrata in Dehradun district and drives a taxi between Chakrata and Dehradun.

The incident came to light when Delhi police found the location of the mobile phone belonging to a missing couple at Chakrata a couple of days back. After finding the location of the mobile phone, Delhi police team reached Chakrata on Friday in search of the missing couple. But the police team had to return disappointed, as the mobile phone was switched off.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Delhi police found out that the mobile phone was switched on and the location of the mobile was once again at Chakrata. The team reached Chakrata and arrested Raju Das, who was carrying the mobile phone, which allegedly belonged to the couple, which was missing from Delhi since the last four days.

During interrogation, Raju Das allegedly told Delhi police that the couple hired his taxi for going to Dehradun and he along with his three accomplices looted the couple and pushed them into a deep gorge on the way to Dehradun. On his information, the police also recovered the bodies of the couple from the forests near Chakrata. However, the three persons who were with Raju Das during the crime are absconding and the police have launched a manhunt to nab them.

Dehradun: Taxi driver, aides rape, murder tourist

A 27-year-old Delhi woman, who along with her friend was robbed and killed by a cab driver and his accomplices in Uttarakhand during the Diwali holidays, was raped, police said Tuesday.

The couple, who lived in Lado Saria in south Delhi, had left for the neighbouring hill state on October 21 and went missing two days later. It was on Monday that the police informed the families that the couple were robbed and killed near the state capital Dehradun. The police suspect the couple were killed on Diwali night on October 23.

Four men — cab driver Raju Das, Bablu, Guddu and Kundan — had been arrested, senior Uttarakhand police officer Swapan Kishore Singh said. He is part of one of the three teams investigating the sensational crime.

“One of them has confessed that he raped the girl, but we are still interrogating if the others were also involved,” Uttarkashi superintendent of police Jagatram Joshi told HT. A source identified the man as Bablu.

The body of the woman, a teacher with a Gurgaon school, is yet to be found. “We are trying to find the girl’s body. This will help establish if she was raped or not,” Joshi said. The body of her 24-year-old friend, a painter from Kolkata, was found in Purola in Uttarkashi district that abuts Dehradun. The couple, said the police, were returning to Dehradun from the popular Tiger Falls in a taxi when three men, who claimed to be friends of Das, joined them. After going some distance, the men asked the couple to step out. They robbed them, raped the woman and then killed them, Joshi said.

Das was arrested Sunday after their team went to Uttarakhand and presented the evidence that the woman’s phone was being used by him, a south Delhi officer told HT on condition of anonymity. “His interrogation led to the arrest of other three,” the officer said.

The men allegedly told the police that they strangled the couple and threw the woman’s body in the Yamuna river from a bridge. They were about to dump the man’s body when an approaching vehicle forced them to abandon the plan. They pushed the body from a nearby cliff, the Delhi officer said.

The murders could have been solved earlier had the Uttarakhand Police taken seriously the call details of the woman’s friend, the officer said. The call log showed the last person the man spoke to was Raju, he said.
