DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand government on Wednesday increased security in all 13 districts after a number of BJP workers and office-bearers held demonstrations and burnt effigies of chief minister Vijay Bahuguna and other top government functionaries including agriculture minister Harak Singh Rawat.
The protestors demanded a recommendation to the centre to order a CBI probe into the murder of Harak's former private secretary Yudhvir Singh Rawat's murder in Dehradun on August 8 by four contract killers allegedly at the behest of a woman identified as Sudha Patwal.
A senior IPS officer in Dehradun said 32-year-old Patwal was arrested from Dehradun on Monday and confessed her role. She denied allegations that she was close to Harak and said that she knew him as Congress worker and not more than that.
A senior police officer said during her interrogation, Patwal confessed to having hatched a conspiracy to gun down Yudhvir after he declined to return Rs 14 lakh paid to him a couple of weeks ago to seek admission of a student in a state government medical college during this academic session.
A police officer who interrogated Patwal said she also confessed that several fake admissions in state government medical colleges at Srinagar and Haldwani after paying hefty amounts allegedly through middlemen over the years.
Members of governing bodies of these colleges denied the allegation. "This is absolutely baseless charges against state government medical colleges as such admissions are not just possible," a member of governing body from Srinagar Medical College said.
Harak is also the minister for department of medical education. He dismissed the allegation against the department saying he is ready for any probe into what he described as "baseless and unfounded" allegations against the department. "These allegations aim at tarnishing my image," said Rawat.
Dehradun SSP Khurna said police have also arrested three contract killers who were allegedly hired by Patwal to kill Yudhvir. "We are trying to interrogate all arrested to get more leads," said a senior police officer.
The state-wide stir was organized by BJP state unit led by state chief Tirath Singh Rawat and leader of opposition Ajay Bhatt.
Hundreds of BJP workers also courted arrest and raised anti-government slogans throughout the day to protest against attempts by state government to shield those actually responsible for murder by trying to get the case hushed up by all means.
"The way chief minister Bahuguna refused to recommend for a CBI probe into Yudhvir's murder has indicated that government is bent upon shielding actual culprits responsible for crime," Tirath said.
