JANUARY 11: A fifty-year-old doctor was shot dead by two unidentified persons at Khar. Cardioligist, Dr Vasant Waman Jaykar, who was attached to Jaslok and Lilavati Hospitals, was shot dead at about 1.30 pm after he was leaving his dispensary in Latakunj Building, 12th Road Khar.
According to the police both his house and his dispensary were in the same building. After examining the patients he was leaving his first floor dispensary and decending towards the ground floor when the incident took place. The police immediately rushed the injured doctor to Babha hospital where he was declared dead before admission. The motive for the murder is not yet known. A case has been registered with the Khar police station.Senior Police Inspector Wallishetty said the buiding did not have a watchman which meant that it was easily accessible to anyone.
Dr Vasant Jaykar is survived by his wife Anagha Jaykar, who is a paedriatician with the Nair hospital and two sons Rahul (14) and Rohan (12). Speaking to the paper one of the relatives of the deceased said, ``We are all very surprised and shocked. The police have started their routine interrogation. They have already interogated the servant who is with the family since the past 14 years.''
Dr Jaykar used to begin his day at 9 am examining patients at his first floor clinic till about noon. After lunch he used to go to the various hospitals he was attached with. At about 4.30 pm he used to go to his clinic in Girgaum and then return home by midnight.
He was an honorary surgeon with the St George's Hospital. A year ago he was also a teacher with the Grant Medical college.According to Dr Arun Mehra, who is also a cardiac surgeon with the Jaslok Hospital Jaykar maintained a very low profile. ``He was never known to be rude with anyone,'' he stated.
