While the police were able to arrest the chief accused, they have not yet found the missing diamonds worth Rs 1.25 crore
The police on Saturday claimed to have made a major breakthrough in the murder and robbery of a diamond delivery boy by arresting the alleged murderer on Thursday. The delivery boy's dead body was found on November 19 close to Panchgani with diamonds worth Rs 1.25 crore missing.
According to the police, Hardik Moradia, who worked for a diamond businessman named Parth Mehta in Panchratna building in South Mumbai, was killed by his friend and neighbour, 32 year-old Naresh Golani, who also worked as a diamond broker, along with three other accomplices. Both, the victim and Golani lived in Virar.
At a press conference, Ajit Surve, Senior Police Inspector of D B Marg police station claimed that initial investigations had revealed that Golani had lured Moradia into selling the diamonds he was supposed to deliver to a client on November 17. However, instead of travelling to Kurla, as was promised by Golani, the accused along with three others, drove Moradia to Panchgani. The group reportedly stabbed the victim multiple times and fled with the diamonds.
According to the police, they were able to solve the case by going through Moradia's phone records and examining CCTV footage taken near Panchratna building. The last call made by Moradia before he went missing on November 17 was reportedly to Golani, and the CCTV footage revealed that the duo met frequently. When Golani was interrogated, he is said to have confessed to the crime.
While the police have been able to recover the car in which Moradia was taken, they haven't yet managed to trace Golani's Wagon R and the missing diamonds. Another accused, a certain Dharmesh Patel, who lives in Gujarat, has been identified and a special police team has been sent to nab him. The other two accused are yet unidentified and at large.
Marodia, who moved to Mumbai five months ago from Gujarat, had gone missing on November 17. Locals discovered his body on November 19, and the police identified him from the card he was carrying in his pocket. He previously worked as a diamond polisher in Gujarat.
